Major Parcel Service Provider: High-Speed Sortation at Scale

The Challenge

In the fast-paced world of parcel delivery, speed is everything. Customers now expect their packages in days or even hours, putting immense pressure on postal and courier services to keep up. A major UK parcel service provider faced this exact challenge—needing a high-speed parcel sorting system that could handle large volumes with pinpoint accuracy and minimal downtime.

The Automatica Solution

After identifying the client’s needs, Automatica provided a cutting-edge automated sortation system—not just one, but eleven high-performance sorting solutions. Our team not only supplied the systems but also managed the full installation process, ensuring a seamless transition with minimal operational disruption.

The selected systems were designed for maximum efficiency, capable of sorting parcels ranging from 150mm x 150mm x 5mm to 1,000mm x 650mm x 800mm, with weights of up to 30kg. At peak performance, the system sorts up to 3,600 parcels per hour, with each parcel moving at 1,250mm per second using 24V energy-efficient drives.

Automation was key to this solution. Each parcel is scanned, size-checked, and weighed before being pre-sorted onto the correct side of the infeed belt conveyor, optimising the sorting process and reducing handling time—because in logistics, every second counts.

The Result

With an average sortation rate of 3,000 parcels per hour and an accuracy rate of 98%, this automated sorting system transformed operations for the client. They now have the capability to scale their logistics network with minimal service disruption, meeting modern delivery expectations with speed and precision. Most importantly, their customers now enjoy faster and more reliable parcel deliveries.
